Proposal: Ban on Use of Partially Hydrogenated Oils (PHOs) in Foods

On October 24, 2016, the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, launched the Healthy Eating Strategy. The objective of the Strategy is to make the healthier food choice the easier choice for all Canadians. One of the initiatives highlighted in the Strategy is prohibiting the use of industrially produced trans fats in foods available on the Canadian marketplace.

Health Canada published a Notice of Proposal signalling its intent to implement this prohibition by adding PHOs to Part 1 of the List of Contaminants and Other Adulterating Substances in Foods. This prohibition is proposed to take effect in the summer of 2018. This would allow industry stakeholders time to phase-out the use of PHOs. Further information on the proposal and a summary of comments received during the previous public consultation are available in the Notice of Proposal

Comments on the proposal need to be submitted by June 21, 2017
